Get an insight into the story of Ærø in a beautiful, historic setting.
Ærø Museum’s cultural history exhibition “Ærø – our island” contains stories and objects about life on Ærø over the centuries. You will be taken on a journey through time; from the old rural society to the present day life as an Ærø resident.
Along the way you will gain insight into a number of key themes in the island’s history – from Ærø as part of the Duchy of Schleswig before the defeat at Dybbøl in 1864, to wedding tourism today. The exhibition also tells you why the people of Ærø boil eggs on the beaches on Easter Saturday – and the story behind the island’s two local flags.
A walk in the museum garden in 1920 gives you a sense of the green and lush Ærøskøbing, which is otherwise relatively hidden from the outside world, behind the densely built facades. The exhibition has won great acclaim from visitors for its stories and atmosphere.
